ARGENTINA: HOPE IN HARD TIMES
Mark Dworkin, Melissa Young (US, 2005, 75 min)
Documentary, World
Plays in ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE;
Saturday, Oct 7, 1:15pm, Student Union Theatre
Chants of “Que se vayan todos! / Throw them all out!” echo off the skyscrapers and streets of Buenos Aires. Argentina’s economy is shot and its politicians corrupt, prompting regular people to do what they can to fix things. The filmmakers document the protests, attend the corner neighborhood assemblies, visits workers’ cooperatives and take a close look at the urban gardens that make up a grassroots democracy struggling against corporate hegemony. A spare narrative, informal interview settings, and candid street scenes reveal the strength, humor, and resilience of the Argentine people. [Director in Attendance]
