Justin Bookey returns to the EFF with another gem after last year’s charming geoduck feature, 3 Feet Under. Every spring, Calaveras County, Calif., celebrates its history with a Jumping Frog Jubilee based on Mark Twain’s famous short story The Celebrated Jumping Frogs of Calaveras County. Jump follows three dedicated frog teams and a solo jockey as they prepare for their annual quest to be Calaveras County’s top jumper – and have their name enshrined on the Hop of Fame. [Director in Attendance]
Mark Twain: In 1865 Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) visited the rough-and-tumble gold miners working the gold-rich foothills of Northern California. He allegedly heard a story in a tavern one night, then sat down and wrote “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” Whether the tale is true or not is still debated to this day. The story captured the popular imagination of the day, and leapt into newsprint across the country and abroad. It launched Twain’s writing career and inspired the Jumping Frog Jubilee that still happens annually in Angels Camp, Calaveras County, California.
